The farm 121 Welbedacht was purchased by Colleen and Michael Thornhill at the beginning of 2015.
The property is a long and narrow 4Km land of 600 acres that consisted of a run-down farmhouse and a super large shed and two Karoo-style labourers cottages. FARMHOUSE 2015
The gardens were virtually non-existent and there were very few trees. Trees do not grow naturally in the Kammanassie other than the invasive Black Wattle and the Hackia. Unfortunately the 76 olive trees which were initially a great attraction contracted a olive leaf beetle which ultimately destroyed the trees.
Since 2015, we have upgraded and renovated the farmhouse into a delightful and functional building, renovated and upgraded one of the typical Karoo labourers cottages, built a fully functional accommodation unit with a single room and a 8 bed dormitory, two cabins, a therapy and presentation room, and a function hall that is still being completed.
The upgrade of the area in front of the farmhouse is still in progress.
Numerous trees have been planted which has brought in a delightful array of birds. The food forest, vegetable gardens are all tended organically and the landscape incorporates Permaculture principles, Jadam Korean natural farming methods and electroculture. VEGETABLE GARDEN AND SHADE AREA
In the greenhouse we grow seedlings and the hot box beds are used for winter vegetable growing. The shadehouse adjacent to the greenhouse is a useful area for growing more vegetables and seedlings when the weather is more mild.
The main food forest is an ongoing project and is currently comprised of a covered area of 700m2 containing vegetable growing beds, and numerous fruit and nut trees.
Flower gardens incorporate mostly indigenous plants and we have created a beautiful succulent rockery. SUCCULENT ROCKERY
